If the computer didn't come with an OS disk there may be a recovery partition on the hard drive with everything you need to restore it to new condition. When you boot up does it say press F10 for recovery or some such?

I think I'd put in a new burner first and if it works, it would save a lot of time & frustration reinstalling the OS and backing up beforehand.
If it doesn't then install it as a second drive and reinstall the O/S."Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
