I suspect it's a new encryption scheme (dvd disc)

You can do both it's good to post dvdfab logs so others can help you. Also I backed up this movie myself with v8.1.7.3 and no issues. I don't think there is any new protection.

I really beginning to wonder if it's the drivers for my new ATI 7970 getting in the way.
When I had my 5870.. I never had a problem, now it's been a PIA and I really am out of
ideas where to look.

So now under new version, no errors in the logs or such... I have to hit cancel, as the FPS go down to zero and time to completion go to 00:00:00

I'm going to try do this on my work laptop as a test.

You have posted in the wrong forum. FPS is only reported in DVD Ripper, this is for DVD Copy, but I will try it also.

//EDIT// I had no problem with it at all. Try turning off all GPU acceleration using the check box near the top of the A//V Codec page in Common Settings. Check to make sure the driver for your video card is the latest.
