Clone vs Main Movie for video quality ?

    Hello,

I have noticed that when I copy using the "Main Movie" and "Clone" that
the VOB files are different in total size. The "Clone" copy has much more
total size for the VOB files and I am not talking about the small VOB files
that represent movie previews. Here is an example:

    With Mission Impossible 4:

    Main Movie:
    VTS_01_1.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_01_2.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_01_3.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_01_4.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_01_5.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_01_6.VOB 67858KB

    Full Clone:
    VTS_15_1.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_15_2.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_15_3.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_15_4.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_15_5.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_15_6.VOB 1048574KB
    VTS_15_7.VOB 378472KB

Notice that the Cloned copy has 1,359.188 KB more "stuff" when you add
up the movie VOBs. So I am wondering if I am degrading video quality
when using "Main Movie" over Clone (bit perfect copy) ???

To be clear I am not counting the Movie Preview VOBs from the Clone copy
which show up as much smaller VOBs in the VIDEO_TS folder.

Are the VOBs trans-coded when you select "Main Movie" and thus less
accurate than the Bit Perfect Clone copy?

    Thanks..

    Hi Tom20171,
DVD Copy clone is for "Make perfect 1:1 bit-to-bit copies. Ideal for dual layer DVD copy, or for PS2 data DVD". Main movie is for "Just copy the movie, with specific audio/subpicture."

That doesn't really answer my question now does it?

I know what "Clone" and "Main Movie" are used for.
My question was if "Main Movie" results in degraded video
quality since the VOB totals are so much smaller even
when I count only those associated with the Main Movie.

I am not an expert, but I have not noticed any quality difference between the two. As you have used both options, do you observe a difference?

There is zero video quality difference between Clone and Main Movie modes if Main Movie is set for DVD-9 output size or if the content will fit on a DVD-5 with no compression.

It is interesting that the Clone Movie VOB's has a FULL VOB and more, than the Main Movie VOB's.

Clone has ALL of the audio and sub streams, Main Movie does not. Depending on how the disc is authored, the Clone VOBs may contain other bits of video that are not part of the main movie title.
