    Subtitles without full disk

Hey guys, just recently found DvdFab, so far...... Brilliant!
However I'm having a problem? I like to write to a HD so I can view DVD's through my PVR (Beyonwiz DP-P1 & 2) Naturally I don't want the menu's or the copywrite warnings but with a film like "Inglourious Basterds" (yes that's how they spell it ) there's a lot of foreign language which requires the subtitles! However I can only get them to work if I do a full disk write. Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong? With Customize I choose the English subpicture, of which there are two (which one, or both?) but I can't get it to show up whilst playing. Only when I do a full copy does it work. Help......

I don't have this disc yet, but it sounds like you need to make one of the subpicture streams play by default. DVDFab does this with the "Default Arrow" which is active in Customize (No Menus), Main Movie and Merge modes. Put a check in the box for the subpicture stream you want, then left click just to the left of selection box and a small arrow will appear. The stream marked with the arrow will play by default whenever you play the folder containing the movie. You can read about it in the Tutorial on the DVDFab website, on the page for Main Movie or Customize.

Yeah thanks for that but nothing comes up when I click next to the checked or ticked, box. It just unselects the tick. I checked the Tutorial but I can't see or get an arrow to come up, I'm using 6.2.0.5 Thanks.

Oh, my bad, I was using customize, not main movie. By the way what is the difference between them, they look the same to me? Also do I need to click both the english subtitles or just one Thanks for the help, I appreciate it

Ok,... Now I'm getting the subtitles up permanently. They should only come up when the Germans or the French are speaking, not when the Americans are speaking. It comes up in yellow with small font when I use full disk mode and only when someone is speaking a foriegn language. With the movie only method it is up all the time and in large white lettering (very annoying) this isn't covered in the tutorial? little help please

Doing main movie you have a choice to have subtitles or not have them. What you are refering to is the forced sub-titles and you do not need to do sub-titles to get those as I think theya re automatic but try doing main movie without subtitles and see if you get those forced subtitles for the movie. No need to burn to DVD just save to computer and playback with WMP or VLC playe

In the Region 1 version of this disc, the yellow/orange subtitles are optically or digitally printed into the film. They are not part of any subpicture stream and will appear even if you make a backup with no subpicture streams selected or defaulted. Versions for other region codes may be different.

Actually, I have tried it with and without subtitles in full disk main movie and customize. If the sub picture is not selected in customize or main movie you do not get any subtitles, if both the English sub pictures are selected you get permanent white subtitles and if only the second English sub picture is selected you get the yellow subtitles that work correctly. I find this both annoying and confusing, given the suggestions brought up here. But for the time being, does anyone know if that second sub picture is going to be consistent with all DVD's. Or is it going to be hit and miss, I am in Australia region 4 but I did get "Inglourious Basterds" to work with the last method mentioned. Thanks

The suggestions that have been posted previously are all good advices. The problem is that subtitles can be and are implemented in different ways on a DVD. It is not consistent for all DVDs. Thus, each DVD must be examined independently in order to properly rip its subtitles for backup. It all depends on the specific method used to implement subtitles by the DVD's builders.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be a smartass, I'm just confused! I was hoping there was some hard and fast rule, like,... the first english subpicture is for permamantly on and the second only comes up when a foreign language is spoken, saving the hassle of rewriting. I gather the only way is to run it and find out if it works from there. Thanks for the help though

There are a few programs around that you can use to get the subtitle info and even view and modify them if you wish.

DVDSubEdit comes to mind as one.

I have just watched this movie. The confusion is due in part to the fact that not all the non-English dialog is translated. There is a long scene in a restaraunt where long German conversations are not translated (this applies to the R1 disc). There are indeed no hard and fast rules, each seems to have a different approach. Earlier versions of Patton had translations in the video (as 'Basterds' does). Apocalypto, which consisted entirely of dialog that required translation, used the Default method rather than forced. DVDSubEDit is an excellent tool and will let you force or unforce the subpictures and do lots of other things. This is handy if you want to use the Display only Forced checkbox for a mobile conversion and need some of the subs to be forced.

This is indeed a remarkable program, I was able to drop the subtitles, of which there over 900, to below the black border, and now it doesn't hinder the view at all. Clearly I've got a lot to learn about VOB files, but you've started me off on what I hope is the correct path. Thanks, it's appreciated
