FWIW, here's the solution that worked in my case....had been running FAB successfully for some years. Installed v7.0.0.3, kept v6.2.2.0. All appeared ok, v7 had inherited settings and registration from v6 setup. However, when v7 scanned a source disk, it would shut-down to the desktop when the scan completed, everytime; no error on screen or in logs. Tried all the permutations in Common Settings; no luck. Finally I reset v7 settings to their defauts, by using the Default button that is at the bottom of the Common Settings window. Quit then restarted; re-selected all my settings and restarted app again. Never a problem since; have done 7 backups of variouse new and old releases that were waiting.

Can't say what setting it was that caused the problem; maybe it was a corrupt pref file that was rewritten when the Default button was envoked.

GregiBoy, since you have the cleanest install, how about you detail the hardware and install process for the machine you have. Make sure to include all software installed (virus, updates, drivers). DVDFab is obviously doing something new that is a problem for very specific hardware, software, and/or drivers. There is obviously something common to all three of your setups that DVDFab is tripping over.

Sure. What do you recommend as a SysInfo tool?

I just figured you knew what they had. I'm guessing you build your own. If not, the brand and model might tell us. I'm really more interested in your install process. We all have default things we do as a matter of course after years of experience and it is these small changes that might hold the answer. Also, is the DVD drive SATA or IDE?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled 2 times and still no go. I tried passkey on my other computer and it works. I have not had time to try fab 7.0 yet but i will and post back. A question before i do ,I don't have a second license so if i don't run both at the same time will i be ok.

should be fine if you not running 2 DVDFab at same time

I installed it on my other computer and it works fine. This computer is the same as the other except the size of the hdd and the processer. This is still a problem that needs to be looked into .

What I am going to do today is revert to the clean cloned install that I use for all my workstation installs of XP SP3 as it is a known working, clean install.

I will document everything from there on.

                          Hi All,
I installed DVD FAB version 7012 a few days ago and it worked great. I did 5 sucessful backups over a few days. I went to backup my copy of This Is It and season one of Nurse Jackie. It did This Is IT and disc one of Nurse Jackie. But when I went to backup disc two it crashed just like the others on this thread. So even though it works for some the problem could show up at any time. 7012 is a little buggy. I hopr the authors get this fixed. I have XP Media Edition.

Smoke started coming out of my GregiBoy Translator (patient pending) when it got to the words "clean cloned install". What does that mean exactly?

I believe your systems are fine and should be working. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of what it is that DVDFab is tripping over since it is obvious that it does not happen for the developers and most users. It could be specific to hardware, driver, installed software, or language.

The only time I see what you describe is when I forget to switch the preview to off and internal codecs. My setups just crash that feature, but then my setups are not anything like a normal user.

A procedure that I always used to use for XP is that I would do a totally clean install of XP exactly as I wanted it and then clone the hard disk and archive the cloned disk.

This allows me easily to a clean install of XP rather than a full reinstall of the OS. Take about 30 mins to revert.
