DVD Ripper How to convert dvd's to watch on an ipad

I've tried using dvd ripper to convert dvd's to .264 (mv4 format), but the ipad2 cannot play them.

what is the correct way to convert them to play on the ipad?

How do they not play? No video? No audio? File rejected/error message (if so, what does it say?) The correct way is to use the iPad profile in DVD Ripper. For my iPad I use the iPhone 4 profile and use the files on both devices. What version of DVDFab are you using?
