Thanks for looking at my problem. I will have another go but I have produced a *.mkv file using the Profile "generic.mkv.h264.audiocopy" and that has subtitles throughout. I presume that the type of resulting file (*.mkv in my case) is not the issue, you outputted a *.avi file.
Did you use the same settings I used - see my earlier post?

Yes the generic.mkv.h264.audiocopy profile will work just fine and select Render to video.

I gave it a go using the "generic.mkv.h264.audiocopy" profile and get subtitles throughout. Must be something with the DVD I have and perhaps other software I have installed interferring.
I have managed to make a copy to DVD of the Main Movie and that is OK i.e. the required subtitles appear when played on my DVD player (just like the original DVD).
Many thanks for your interest in my problem.

Did you tick "Display only Forced subpicture"?

Then unless someone else has an idea I have no clue what is wrong. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Well... it's sorted! I made a copy of the Main Movie to DVD and then used that DVD to make the *.mkv file with the correct subtitles. Easy when you know how!
