I have some anime that I really want to convert so I can watch them on my ipod classic, but when I put the files into DVDFab, it cannot find any subtitles (the spoken language is Japanese and the subtitles are in English). I know they are there because I can play them in VLC player. Help?

If you are posting about an operational problem with either the DVD to Mobile or File to Mobile option of DVD Fab, you will improve the speed and accuracy of the response by providing some information in the very first post that will be needed to assist you. Please have a look at the informational links in my signature below before reporting a problem as one of these may solve your problem.
Posts with all the requested information will be answered first.
First, make note of any error codes or messages that appear in popup boxes and put them in your post. Information on error codes that appear in the DVDFab UI are captured in one of the logs we request below.
DVDFab keeps logs of its activities that supply basic system information and can help pinpoint where and when an error happened and help pinpoint the cause. The default location for these logs on most Windows systems is:
C:\Documents and Settings\your username\My Documents\DVDFab\Log
The logs are simple text files that can be opened with Windows Notepad. If the size exceeds the forum’s attachment size limit, you may need to delete older entries or copy and paste the relevant ones into a new file.
dvdfab_process.log Attach if DVDFab crashes and the crash report window does not come up or complete correctly or if internal error codes appear in the DVDFab window (“Task Failed…”). Time stamped, most recent at the bottom.
dvdfab_internal.log Attach for all problems. Time stamped, most recent at the bottom. Please edit to include only the most recent or relevant log session.
Make sure that you are using good procedures. Recommendations can be found
This Information Is Required!!!
The DVDFab version number. We suggest that you make sure that you are least using the latest which can be found and recommend that you also try the latest which can be found .
The nature of the problem.
The EXACT profile you used and any parameters within it that you may have changed.
If using a custom profile, please attach it to your post.
Whether this happens with all titles or just one.
Your operating system/CPU/memory configuration.
If you have made any recent changes to your OS or system hardware
If you have other DVD or BD software installed, particularly if recently added.
For File to Mobile, this additional information will speed resolution of the problem:

please can you do me a favor, for sake of experiment set resolution for mp4 same as source mkv and see if subs are there. Sometimes subs are not re-sized correctly with resolution change. Also, please scan both source and mkv with MediaInfo and post reports here. Thank yousigpic

IPopov50, this may sound stupid, but how do I set the resolution the same? The highest resolution I can find on DVDFab is 720x404, and the anime is 1280x720.
I'm also not sure what you meant by scanning the source.
But here's what MediaInfo had to say about the mkv:

I think the problem here is that the subtitles are held in the MKV as Substation Alpha format which Fab does not understand.
You will need to find some software to extract the SSA subs and convert to SRT or SUB/IDX formats or go back to the original disks."Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." - Benjamin Franklin 1706-1790

Now, please scan your mp4 file and post report, same way you did it with MKV file. Thanks.sigpic

I was thinking of compatibility, but I was thinking of mp4. Do you know if mp4 container can accommodate SSA subs?sigpic

I use Subtitle Workshop & Subtitle Edit but I do not know if they can extract from MKV's. Maybe IPopov has some ideas there.
MP4's cannot contain the ASS subs natively. The subs will need to be hard rendered in.
This is really a job for a good video editor software, not File to Mobile."Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." - Benjamin Franklin 1706-1790

That's what I was thinking too.
@lilly1991
You can try to extract stream using MKVextract and process it as GregiBoy suggested...
or download DSRT from here: http://dsrt.boom.ru/down-eng.htm
when installed and open,
(a) drag and drop your mkv to DSRT
(b) Alt+Shift+I to convert ASS to SRT
(c) Ctrl+F7 to remove overlaps if any ( or other errors)
other useful commands:
Alt+F11 to remove errors
Ctrl+S to save
Ctrl+Shift+S to save as ASCII
Alt+V to edit with video
Otherwise, "readme" file is very helpfulsigpic
