MKV file to mpeg4 but cannot find any subtitles

I have some anime that I really want to convert so I can watch them on my ipod classic, but when I put the files into DVDFab, it cannot find any subtitles (the spoken language is Japanese and the subtitles are in English). I know they are there because I can play them in VLC player. Help?

If you are posting about an operational problem with either the DVD to Mobile or File to Mobile option of DVD Fab, you will improve the speed and accuracy of the response by providing some information in the very first post that will be needed to assist you. please can you do me a favor, for sake of experiment set resolution for mp4 same as source mkv and see if subs are there. Sometimes subs are not re-sized correctly with resolution change. Also, please scan both source and mkv with MediaInfo and post reports here. Thank you

IPopov50, this may sound stupid, but how do I set the resolution the same? The highest resolution I can find on DVDFab is 720x404, and the anime is 1280x720.

I'm also not sure what you meant by scanning the source.

You will need to find some software to extract the SSA subs and convert to SRT or SUB/IDX formats or go back to the original disks.

You should go to "Edit" page ->Video Effects ->Customize and enter 1280x720 ->add ->OK

You did with MKV file exactly what I meant. MKV is your source, you scan it with MediaInfo and got report.
Now, please scan your mp4 file and post report, same way you did it with MKV file. Thanks.

I was thinking of compatibility, but I was thinking of mp4. Do you know if mp4 container can accommodate SSA subs?

I use Subtitle Workshop & Subtitle Edit but I do not know if they can extract from MKV's. Maybe IPopov has some ideas there.

MP4's cannot contain the ASS subs natively. The subs will need to be hard rendered in.

This is really a job for a good video editor software, not File to Mobile.

You can try to extract stream using MKVextract and process it as GregiBoy suggested...

or download DSRT from here: http://dsrt.boom.ru/down-eng.htm
when installed and open,
(a) drag and drop your mkv to DSRT
(b) Alt+Shift+I to convert ASS to SRT
(c) Ctrl+F7 to remove overlaps if any ( or other errors)

other useful commands:
Alt+F11 to remove errors
Ctrl+S to save
Ctrl+Shift+S to save as ASCII
Alt+V to edit with video

Otherwise, "readme" file is very helpful

Thank you both so much, but is there any way to keep the fonts the way they are? And in the format they are in? Converting them to .srt makes them boring and some of the words don't come out right

Geez, you are going further and further.... this thread goes far beyond DVDFab issues.... at this point I would suggest you to visit "generic" forums like videohelp or doom9. You will find better assistance there...
