What is the best method to convert dvds/blu-rays to storage?

I've been using DVDFab for years, sometimes using copy and sometimes using ripper. Lately I've been using the MKV passthrough rather than "copying" the main movie. When watching movies converted to my NAS I do so using DVD Fab player to my HD TV. I can't say I've noticed any quality difference between "copied" movies and MKV passthrough converted movies although the file sizes are similar.

Is there any "loss", image quality or audio using passthrough rather than copy?

They are identical, so if file size is not an issue, this is a good way to process them. There is zero loss with Passthrough!
