Need some assistance on UHD backups with optical drive change using my current setup.

    Hi,
it’s been a while since I’ve posted as I have a well oiled HTPC that works well with DVDs, BDs and backed up discs. I’ve been considering going the UHD route with my HTPC but after reading a number of posts sad to say I’m confused. Here’s what I’d like to do.

My a Current I5 based HTPC will play MKV type UHD movies but is a bit glitchy using PowerDVD.

    1. I’d like to install an new internal UHD optical drive. I don’t care if it doesn’t play the UHD disc smoothly as long as I can use the DVDFab UHD software to back it up. Is this possible our will I have to change the guts of my entire HTPC (I don’t want to put anymore money into it) to make backup possible.

    2. I am considering the DVDFab Movie Server with a large HDD to play the movies so playing the UHDs on my current HTPC won’t be an issue as long as I can back them up with my current setup with an updated UHD optical drive.

Can I make this happen with my current HTPC and what UHD disc player would you suggest?

    Thanks.

Try to find a full size LG drive that is UHD Friendly, such as the USB 3.0 BE16NU50 fw 1.01 or or the BH16NS55 fw 1.02 or lower (internal SATA). Note that the firmware must be as specified or it won't work. The full size drives are more mechanically robust than the slimline laptop types. Please see this page for a list of drives that have been tested with DVDFab and are known to work.https://www.dvdfab.cn/4k-uhd-drives.htm

I emphasize again that the firmware must be as specified on the list. If the vendor can't tell you the firmware version, make sure it is returnable with no penalty or buy elsewhere.

Thanks for the info. I just read a little further regarding PC requirements and it looks like my current set up won’t support backing up UHD discs even with a qualified drive. Currently have:

      - Intel Core i5-4570S Quad-Core Desktop Processor 2.9 GHZ 6MB Cache (Processor)
      - Graphics card AMD HD 6670
      - ASUS Z97M-PLUS LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 (mother board)

It should work in Software conversion mode, but will be painfully slow. For anything more than once-in-a-while use with UHD sources, think i7 CPU and nvidia GTX 1080/2080 (or better) GPU.
