DVD Ripper to PS3; how to get the very best video quality?

When I ripped my first DVD to PS3 I didn't adjust any components/parameters (frame resolution, bitrate etc), more or less just ripped the DVD with all 'pre-choiced' recommendations/parameters. I wasn't impressed of the outcome when looking at the movie on my 42" plasma TV (via the PS3 machine). Files are stored on an external WD hard disk drive.
I've also read 'Convert DVD to PS3' and 'Conversion Settings' on dvdfab.com

How to adjust certain parameters to get/gain the same video quality as the purchased DVD record?
    "Size matters", or!? ;-)

If there is any thread in this matter, please show me, and yes; I am a rookie in this matter.

Many thanx from a snowy and cold Stockholm
    Magnus

You can use the forum search tools to find the many threads concerning the PS3. Generally, if you want the same quality as the original DVD, try the VOB Passthrough option in DVD Ripper. It is also much faster than re-encoding the video as MPEG-4 (but the files are much larger).

Please do not put links in your post that are not pertinent to the discussion. This is not a place to assist your Google rank.

VOB Passthrough will give you the quality you want but many of your movies will be split into multiple files if the WD hard drive is plugged into the PS3 directly (which means it must be formated FAT32 with a 4G file size limit). If you want complete files with full quality (VOB) then you will need to move to a streaming setup. Otherwise, click the Edit button once you have selected a title and profile (ex. PS3) and up the rate until you are happy.

Thanx for the replies and sorry for the link issue.

I did try the VOB passthrough alternative - but didn't get any sound, que?
Haven't yet been able to make any investigations, but perhaps you can give me any clues...?

However, with the VOB option the video/picture quality got great!
I've also tried with higher frame resolution and double encoding [2-pass] in the 'normal ps3 mode' with fairly OK results - almost there ;-)

I use the VOB Passthrough for almost all my movies and TV seasons on the PS3 without issue. Make sure you are not selecting the DTS audio track as the PS3 will not play it from a file (or streaming).

Alright, one more try... however, the VOB file won't even sound on my PC (HP Pavilion dv-7 4032, Radeon HD5650,Core i5-450M) Can't remember if the DVD (last RAMBO) did have any DTS option.... Thanks anyway!

Alright, almost there - for one unknown reason I now did get the sound.

Next 'pint', I didn't get any subtitle/picture in Swedish. The subtitle/picture came out in a separate file and I wasn't able to select 'direct render to video' during the config setup for the ripping session. I could not even select subtitle when runing the VOB file on my PS3 - not available? So how to get the Swedish text 'in the film'?

But the video quality is now GREAT!

You will not be able to use VOB Passthrough (best quality), have subtitles, and play the file on the PS3. You can burn them in when re-encoding ('normal ps3 mode'). The PS3 also supports selectable subtitles in a DIVX container but you will still need to re-encode and need an extra step with a free third party tool (search for selectable subtitles in the forums).
