    Difference between "Copy" and "Ripper"

    Greetings,

I did my best to search for an answer to this question both on this forum and others with no success. My goal is to identify the differences between Blu-Ray Ripper and Blu-Ray Copy.

Currently, I have a lifetime subscription to DVD-Copy. It works great. I can use it to copy the contents of a DVD to my hard drive, and from there, I use the latest version of [other software] to convert it either for my iPod Touch, or to an MP4 playable through my Blu-Ray player's USB port.

It sounds like BD Ripper functions bother as a copier and converter, eliminating the need for [other software]. However, in order to convert, it must copy as well. In other words, it appears that BD Copy will copy the disks, and BD Ripper will copy AND convert, which doesn't explain why they cost the same.

In short, why would anyone purchase BD Copy, if BD Ripper has the same functionality - and then some?

Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

BD Copy is similar to DVD Copy, with Main Movie, Full Disc, Clone copy modes etc. It writes to a blank BD disc or to HDD files with a BD folder structure or as an image file. It does not convert to MOV, M4V, AVI, MKV etc, this is done with BD Ripper. Both BD Copy and BD Ripper can decrypt BD discs as they do their other jobs, unlike other software.

This is eplained in detail on the dvdfab.com website.

Sorry, no, Ripper products are able to remove copy protection but do not copy. They make new files playable by various devices. They will not make a disc.

EDIT: Guess I'm not fast enough. Didn't see you there signals.

        So just to clarify...

"Copy" can create BD's equivalent of unprotected .VOB files (saved to a hard drive), but cannot convert to other formats.

"Ripper" cannot create BD's equivalent of unprotected .VOB files, but can make conversions to other formats.

        Is this correct?

Not exactly. BD Copy can copy a BD to the hard drive and keeps the existing BD structure (or just the main movie). That structure uses M2TS files but they may be split into many files due to the way things are authored.

Actually, BD Ripper is the only thing that can give you a clean single M2TS file if that is what you are looking for.

If you want to copy a BD to another disc they you will need BD Copy. If you want to create other files then you would need BD Ripper. A common use case is to use both products when processing multiple discs, BD Copy to the hard drive and then BD Ripper using the queue feature to setup multiple conversions (often overnight).

            Excellent info, many thanks.

The thing that confused me is that I've been using DVD-Copy for my DVDs; using the software to rip them to VOB structures on my hard drive.

I was trying to correlate this functionality to the similarly-named products for blu-ray media.
