Optical Drives Problem with SATA Drives and 64-bit OS?

I have a Dell system with (currently) Windows 7 64-bit and Fab 9.0.4.0. My drive is currently a LiteOn iHAS 124-04 SATA drive, which is Windows 7 certified. I was previously trying to use a SONY Optiarc AD-7200S ATA drive, which is also a SATA drive but is not Windows 7 certified. I also was previously running the 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

My problem is that with BOTH of these SATA drives and BOTH OSes, Fab cannot read my DVDs. I previously also was trying to use version 8.0.8.5, and NEITHER would read either of my SATA drives. Here are a couple of example log files:

    8.0.8.5 Burn log:

I have played with different I/O modes, and gotten no difference. I installed ImgBurn, which is able to burn to my new drive. I'm also able to play DVDs with Media Player.

One reason that I suspect the magic combo of SATA drives and 64 bit OSes is that, after considerable reading of the forums, I have not read anything about the combination of SATA and 64 bit working successfully. Every time I try to read a DVD, Fab hangs and will not release back to the OS, requiring a reboot.

I think I've tried everything, but welcome any suggestions you guys might have.

OK, I'll give it a go and report back. Thanks.

Same for me with internal and external SATA drives on Win7 64-bit and no problems at all. Make sure you don't have some other software that blocks DVDFab's access to the drive.

OK, I uninstalled, cleared out Prefetch and used CCleaner. Reinstalled 9.0.4.0 and it still hangs when trying to access the drive. What other programs could prevent Fab from accessing the drive? I haven't installed anything that would grab the drive other than the standard stuff that comes with a stock install EXCEPT ImgBurn. I also only have the one drive.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention -- Once again my drive does not show up as available! I have seen this problem previously but somehow after opening and rebooting a (big) number of times, the drive shows up with its model and serial number.

Another discovery -- when I try to run Fab with no DVD inserted, the Open Directory dialog shows all of my drives. When I have placed a DVD in the drive, the Open Directory dialog is blank, and it causes the program to hang.

I looked at the "sensekey" commands (SCSI sense keys, even though the drive is not SCSI) in the logs. Sense Key 2-3A-01 means "medium not present-tray closed". I'd say that this means the drive is being checked but the DVD cannot be read. The 0-00-00 one means "ready" I think.

I went ahead and updated the firmware in my optical drive. The iHAS124 W now has HL08 at the LiteOn site.

I'll check to see if Dell has any new drivers that would affect the mobo. I already flashed the BIOS to the latest version I found.

Packet writing software used to be bad about this. The software that lets you use a DVD RW like a floppy disk. Nero InCD, Drag-N-Drop and that sort of thing.

Windows 7 has packet writing s/w BUILT IN. Does anyone know how I could disable it to see if there's a conflict? Then again, why doesn't everyone else with W7 and Fab have the same problem?

Never had any problem with that on my standard Win 7 Ultimate installs.

Are you sure that Dell hasn't included some "Special Present"?

My W7 is from Microsoft, so there shouldn't be any "presents" left over from my Vista installs with Dell CDs. IIRC the Win 7 install (NOT a so-called "upgrade") scrubs off the other OSes before installing.

Mine is W7 Professional, not that it probably matters....

The Windows 7 "Live File System" has never been a problem to my knowledge. I was talking about some of the others from Nero or Roxio that use to give us hell back in the old days.

Just to be sure look here and be sure the box(s) are checked so your drive is not excluded in Fab:

My drive has once again appeared in the Drives dialog. My new f/w showed up correctly. I have only one drive, and it IS checked.
