      Thanks BIG,

Here is another utility, which will yield more specific info.
It will also benchmark your rig.

Free and a very useful little app:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

What OS came installed when you purchased?

Do you have or have access to:
        an external burner?
an external enclosure that will accomodate an ODD (5.25" bay) and another internal ODD?
With this, you can connect via usb and the burner will be controlled by the usb controller and I suspect this will work ok with Fab..

I did take a look at your dell manual and saw this:

        "SATA
        Operation
        (AHCI
        default)
Determines the integrated SATA controller's operating mode,
which can be either AHCI or ATA.
        "

I'm not very techie, just an old fart...(almost 61...)...and your basic, "shadetree mechanic" when it comes to pcs, but it would appear that you can configure your bios to run your ODD in IDE and not AHCI although AHCI is the default.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I am not an INTEL fan so am unfamiliar with their boards and chipsets. I was reading through some other forums and people with similar issues resolved them by updating their chipset drivers, speciffically the Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

FYI DELL isn't up to date with Win7 drivers for your system so you will have to go through intel. That is quite a MONSTER rig you have there BTW

I will go to the Intel and get the latest Win7 drivers for this "MONSTER RIG".
                LOL
I have a couple of the older IDE dvd players. I will also connect via USB one of them and get back with you on the results.

                Thanks

having issues since migrating to Windows 7

I was able to attached via USB a DVD-ROM and the ROM is recongnized by the pc, the movie plays fine in Windows Media player, but FAB doesnt recognize the ROM. I even go so far as trying to map the drive at the source folder on FAB, but to no avail.

                        HELP!!

Have you tried updating your motherboard yet ? Without the proper drivers the OS cannot properly configure your chipset for specific functionality such as USB and storage controller. Windows ships with generic drivers that try to cover the broadest range of customers. You have a highend workstation and I highly doubt that Microsoft knows what is best for it. Since Dell is no help you will have to go to the source INTEL.

When I build a new system or Install a new OS I always and in this order update the BIOS, install OS, update chipset/ mobo drivers, video card drivers then sound card. Then I proceed to install software starting with Anti Virus. I have found that I have alot less issues this way. I really fell you have a Hardware/driver issue. Back to your previous post about switching back to Vista If it were me I would try a clean installation of Win7 with all updated drivers before I resorted to going back. Do you have a spare HD?

having issues since migrating to Windows 7

                              Johan,

Actually, I do not use the generic windows drivers as i do have the Intel drivers installed and Intel site suggest that for my chipset, the driver version that i have installed works with my hardware in Windows 7.

I have downloaded a newer chipset driver from Intel, but have yet to install as I will have to read the release notes before I do so.

Also, On the intel site there is a utility that scans for outdated Intel drivers, I ran that and the scan came back ok, but will install newer drivers if I'm comfortable with what I read in the release notes.

                              Ill keep everyone posted.

                              Thanks.
