    All,

    Re: Captain Phillips Blu-ray forced subs:

    I have tested this title using Full Disc and Main Movie copy modes which resulted in perfect playback of forced subs on TMT5 and DVDFab Media Player. All English sub streams were selected to be included in the output.

    I also converted the full disc rip to MP4 using the second English stream+Display Only Forced and direct render to video with perfect results. Also converted to MKV with Display Only Forced but selecting remux into file, also with perfect results (VLC, DVDFab Media Player, TMT5).

    If you followed the correct steps and the forced subs do not display without any user intervention, it is an issue of your player or its settings, not DVDFab.

    You are correct that the Preview wiindow does not filter and display forced subs, this needs to be improved.

    Tests were run with Fab v9.1.2.5 and the Region A/US retail version of the disc.

      You don't but with a basic grasp you'd know what can be expected and what can't. PowerDVD11 is a media player and even if DVDFab Media Player should be on par, the same does not necessarily hold true for a ripper. The preview function in DVDFab is nice to have but I doubt they'll implement all the code necessary to mimic a player's behaviour let alone the ripping routines for extracting forced subs info from MovieObject.bdmv or BDJO.

      While you wait for the paid developers to do their jobs, why not rip the full disc to ISO with other rippers and test them on your Micca. My guess: it won't make a difference when it comes to forced subs.

        Signals:For your first test what was your setting in Fab settings in screen shot?
        Does it even matter for full disk and main movie what this is set for? Same question for second and third tests.
        VLC didn't display correct for this test then.
        Do you have Elysium blu ray to test this?

          33
          00:19:35,174 --> 00:19:36,216
          What happened?

          34
          00:23:23,152 --> 00:23:26,112

          37
          00:23:35,497 --> 00:23:36,998
          Yes.

          38
          00:23:39,126 --> 00:23:40,168
          Well...

          39

          40

          00:23:48,135 --> 00:23:49,844
          This is yours now.

          42

          43
          00:37:02,095 --> 00:37:04,763
          You have work to do, Mr. Carlyle.

          45

          47
          01:38:58,433 --> 01:39:00,517
          One thing that they are destined to do.

          48
          01:39:01,477 --> 01:39:03,728
          One thing they were born for.

            Glenns, I will have to check the settings for the subs. I know I checked the box in the sub selection drop down when I was running BD Ripper. The setting does NOT matter for any Copy mode (BD or DVD), but you must include the sub stream that contains the forced subs, so that they will be there when you run Ripper. And there shouuld be NO default arrows for any of the sub streams, that will confuse the player.

              Ok here is the setting's to use for MKV to work with forced subs for playback on the Micca media player for Elysium blu ray region a or 1

              Pick the second set of English subs from the pull down menu with a check mark only no triangle uncheck the first set of English subs.Check mark display only forced sub titles.The setting in Fabs conversion settings (see the screen shot) as the screen shot shows no check mark their.

              Now the important part is to select advanced settings in mkv profile and set the subtitle mode to extract to idx/subfile and for blu ray the box to the right should be set PGS subtitle.

              With these settings the Micca will be able to display just the forced subtitles however you need to turn them on with the remote just play external vobsub using the subtitle selection button on the remote and only the forced will play.

              The player will remember your setting if you played the movie before and go back to it later if you select return to last point in movie when the movie starts so you won't have to turn the subs on with the remote in this case.

              You can set the Micca to play subs automatic by going into intelligent setup
              and set subtitle default load to on but if you do so all subs will play by them self's making you turn them off for all other movies.

              I have not found a way to play just the forced subs with the Micca media player for full disk or main movie with this blu ray Elysium using just Fab.

                I haven't watched the entire movie again but I do remember having seen occasional dropouts with some test MKVs created by DVDFab, in this case it was "This is Frey" but not on every playback. A comparison between the original subs ripped from m2ts (i.e. forced subs only) and forced subs muxed by DVDFab shows the number of items to be identical. Apparently something about DVDFab's muxing is throwing off players. When I re-ripped the entire movie with MKV passthrough and forced subs only, the subs were also out of sync.

                Why idx/sub? We're talking about Bluray (remux into file > PGS subtitle) or are you also ripping the DVD?

                Apparently - like most if not all media players - the Micca does not seem to read the forced flags in that English stream when it's m2ts/ISO. And since you're not ripping to MKV, DVDFab does not extract the forced items only but keeps the entire track.

                  This is so the Micca will work with forced subs it can play the idx/sub with only forced selecting the 2nd english subtitle only with forced subs checked but not remuxed into file for the blu ray Elysium.This way it works remux doesn't work for the Micca.I don't know why. I spent many hours to try to get it to work on the Micca.Doing it this way won't work for power dvd the other way works for it.I got the idea using version 8 that only has the idx/sub choice in ripper for mkv passthrough.I did use the remux profile in version 8.

                    Which again suggests it's a problem of the Micca rather than DVDFab (which of course still has its own issues with forced subs).

                      I also did this movie the other way using remuxed into file and like Vlc player the Micca will play this mkv with a few subtitles you do have to turn them on also but it's just like Vlc player something Fab does in muxing is messing up the subtitles they are not in sync.This seems to be a bug and needs fixing.

                        To reply to the earlier question, I do not have the forced subs box in Common Settings checked.

                        Why mux the forced subs into the stream anyway? To reproduce a theatrical viewing of the film, why not just burn them into the video. ??

                          This is the only way this blu ray Elysium MKV forced subs works in Micca media player.

                          When doing it your way the MKV will not work in VLC player or the Micca they both play them out of sync or plays only some of the subtitles on the full list of forced subtitles that I re-posted in this topic for this movie.Remember your working with a different disk so I am not sure that disk Capt Phillips will give the same results.

                          The Elysium MKV won't work with powerdvd11 no subs or audio are displayed when you call up the settings on screen but theirs audio playing.

                          Using the full disk of Elysium powerdvd11 works fine with forced subs the way you posted but then the Micca won't work with full disk.

                          I think ripper has a problem making some player's not sync subtitles when ripped your way.I also think the Micca media player like most players can't read the flagged subtitles when playing the full disk both as Chetwood stated in past posts.

                          Like he said he had some trouble playing the forced subs in VLC player also.Although he said he didn't view the whole movie and found fewer things wrong than I did with my complete written list of all the forced subs in this movie.

                          For this movie I can make a mkv and have a work around for the Micca media player and can use power dvd for the full disk playback so I am good as long as their are not many disks like this one.I will test Capt.Phillips when I get it maybe it's the same maybe not.

                            Personally I hate fiddling with video quality so I don't do it and since we now have decent containers like MKV it's not necessary anymore. It is a viable option for users who shrink their movies but that still doesn't change the fact that DVDFab has issues with MKVs/forced subs.

                              Not necessary if the player supports MKV correctly, which is apparently not universally true. Not aware of any effect on video quality of the directly rendered subs. I do not disagree that if the muxed subs problem is in DVDFab it should be fixed.

                                Granted, still it is comparatively easy to mimic proper behaviour by muxing the forced sub as the first stream of the MKV. Of course it would be nice for DVDfab to support both forced and regular sub tracks inside an MKV.
