    Bourne Legacy fails

    Hii,
I am evaluating DVDFab, but it fails on the first disk I tried: Bourne Legacy. I am trying the Copy-function, with Output set to BD5/720.

The computer is a Sony Vaio with 8GB RAM, i5-Sandy bridge and an AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics card.

I have tried it five times now, with various settings in the check boxes for Remove HD audio and convert to AC3.

The copy runs for about 1.5 hours with mixed results. Twice it ran to completion (Success!), but produced an ISO file of 71 GB in size! (the original Bluray is 25GB I think, it should be around 4.3 to fit on a DVD)

Three times it crashed at 98% with the following in the log:

Your log seems incomplete, please close DVDFab, then reopen it with the problem disc in the drive and paste or attach the log session in this thread. Try setting the A/V Codec controls to all Software.

I have the Region A/US version of the disc and will try it also. I do not remember any problems with it when it was released, I made a copy for my iPad.

Thanks for your response. The A/V settings are already all "Software". I have now checked "Disable all GPU" and am trying it again, will post the log. It says it will take about 2.5 hours and it's about two hours left.

Earlier today, I tried 8.1.9.6 on another of my laptops, an Aspire Aethos 8951g, 8 GB RAM, CPU: Intel Core i7 2670QM, GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

It ran perfectly fine producing a DVD in 48 minutes. Coult it be that it has GeForce and my Vaio has ATI Radeon?

8.1.9.6 also has a visible option called "Blu-ray -> DVD", which I cannot find in version 9. Could it be that I chose "Copy", but should have chosen something else instead?

I have the US version of the disc and will try it also. Blu-ray to DVD is also available in v9, see the attached screen capture for the location.

The log in post #3 appears to be the same as the earlier one. And, yes, ATI video cards are problematic.

Note that a BD-5 which you are trying to produce, is AVCHD format and will not play on a DVD player, it is just designed to fit on a DVD blank disc but still requires a Blu-ray player for playback.

          Thanks again for your reply,

I restarted DVDFab, this time it finished in 2 hours 13 minutes, producing an .iso file of 71 GB. Something is obviously wrong. Maybe it has something to do with the ATI card, since there was no problem with 8.1.9.6 and the GeForce card?

Thanks for the pointing out BD -> DVD in v9.

BD5 would be great, as high resolution and graphic quality as possible in 4300 MB is great for me.

I plan on maybe buying a new, standalone PC (haven't had one in 15 years) to be able to fit an NVidia GeForce 760 card. Can I expect a significant performance increase with the more powerful GPU card?

Thanks for your prompt response, I greatly appreciate it.

after the initial bad start with v9, I'm getting very impressed with DVDFab. To be true, I feel much more at home with v8, it's a lot simpler to use and looks fantastic!

One thing that I find repelling, is that when I look to buy the program I don't get a price - I get a gazilllion different prices. This is the technical support forum and I realize that this subject may be outside the scope, but I find it very confusing. Is there some easy, no bull - straight to the point, quick reference to help me decide which of all these products I want?

I want to backup Blu-rays and DVDs, primarily onto DVD-R discs, but I may also get interested in fiddling with general video formats (let the computer chew all night, but generate as high video quality as possible in 4300 MB, for example)

You are welcome. I am not sure what you are seeing, I just made a test conversion of the Blu-ray using Blu-ray to DVD and it turned out great. I did not use the HD 7.1 audio as the source, this disc has 3 audio mixes, the 7.1 HD Master, a 5.1 version and a 2-channel version. I first made a Main Movie only rip to an external hard drive and kept only the 5.1 and 2.0 audio streams. Then I used the hard drive copy as the Source for the BD to DVD conversion using only the 5.1 audio, which DVDFab converted to AC3/5.1 for the DVD output.

There are many purchase options with DVDFab which can be bewildering. It is done this way to allow users to buy only what they need at the time and for license terms from 1 year to lifetime. The product selector page has checkboxes for each module and a dropdown selector for the license term. Look over the website, there are several packages that offer discounts and there is almost always a coupon code on the homepage that you can enter to get 20% or more off depending on the promotion.

Keep in mind that v8 is not updated very often and may not be officially supported much longer. There are features and tweaks in v9 that will never be in v8 because the GUI can't support them and v9 will also always have the newest decryption updates, which can be slow reaching v8. Any license you purchase will work both v8 and v9, and you can install both with no conflicts.

Thanks again. My disc has HD-sound in five different languages, and a 2-channel version.

I suspect the problem is with my laptop with the Radeon graphics card (even though all GPU options have been switched off - use only "Software". But now I have a version that works on another laptop (with a GeForce card), so I'm happy.

Sorry for all questions; just one more: if I get a more powerful GPU card like the new GTX 760 (which is rated around 5000 at cpubenchmark.net, compared to around 930 for the GT555m); is it reasonable to expect a significant speedup using CUDA cores?

The CPU in the stationary is an i3-3240 compared to an i7-2670QM. The i3 has less cache and less threading, but Ivy bridge instead of Sandy bridge, and full voltage compared to mobile version - so I think the i3 should have about the same power. That of course depends on how DVDFab manages threads. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks again, and thanks for great software. I won't ask more questions.

I am not sure about the newer GPU, but I doubt under any circumstances that the i3 would be capable of out-performing the i7, even the QM version. The 'all software' setting in many cases produces higher quality output and on my i7QM laptop is actually faster than CUDA (GTX 570M, 3GB). The optimum configuration for Blu-ray Ripper or Copy (when compressing) seems to be an i7 with a motherboard that supports intel QuickSync. This is what moderator 90312 has and he gets astounding frame rates on conversions.

Not so much with 9.1.2.8, it's not utilizing all my cores and my speed is way under par. I can't swear it's not my problem but I've checked and everything looks copacetic.

90312:Last two versions of Fab (Version9) used only using 4 cores in converting to 25 gigs but when making side by sides 8 cores are being used so depends on what your converting.

I tested with Riddick using 9127 & 9128 did a main movie compressed to 25 gig from 50 gig regular blu ray.Fab used 4 cores other 4 were parked but lightning shrink was also on.Results done in 16.22 mins. that's fast at 32-33 mb/s.

compared to version 8 it will use all 8 cores but theirs no lightning shrink so same movie took 37 mins. only 14.46 mb/s less than 1/2 versions 9 speed even though version 8 used all 8 cores.

If version 9 with lightning shrink was used and 8 cores should get it down to 8 mins or less so you would think.

P.S. New drivers came down in separate windows update today but I don't think they made it any faster than it was.
