DVDFAB 9 will no longer read disks

I'm puzzled. I have been using DVDFAB 8 and 9 for a long time with few problems. Recently, though, DVDFAB 9 has lost the ability to read any DVDs on both my laptop and desktop PCs. For example, it constantly tries to read "Turbo" and "Game of Thrones" DVDs but it never gets anywhere. I did a complete uninstallation and cleaned the registry with CCleaner, rebooted and then re-installed, but now it just says "please check if it's playable".

VLC mediaplayer has no problems with either of these disks, and DVDFAB 8QT was able to copy them without any difficulty. This has been happening with versions 9142 and 9.145.

    My licences are:

    DVD Copy - Never expire
    DVD Ripper - Never expire
    Video Converter - Never expire
    File Transfer - Never expire
    HD Decrypter - Never expire

Can anyone suggest what's going on and how I can get this working again?

    Many thanks.

Can't duplicate the problem. Check the upper/lower filters in your registry. ImgBurn will do this for you if you have it (Tools->Filter Driver Load Order). Look for any new entries or any from software you do not recognize and delete them. Whatever placed them will probably no longer work without reinstalling.

Start DVDFab with no discs in any drive and post the DVDFab internal and fabcheck log files.

      Thanks for your reply, Signals.

I have had another stab at r-installing on the desktop machine and get the same result. Here's the internal log:

DVDFab can't communicate with your optical drive(s) for some reason, see these log entries:

        0m 07.10s: Burn engine: writer count 0.
        and
        0m 20.42s: opening drive E
        0m 20.43s: opened i/o
0m 20.44s: DriveX msg: media open(false) failed in driveX E.
        0m 20.45s: opening drive H
        0m 20.45s: opened i/o
0m 20.46s: DriveX msg: media open(false) failed in driveX H

The most common cause of this is a conflict with other software you have recently installed or updated, especially if it uses or accesses optical drives. Unusual that VLC and earlier versions of DVDFab are working. One of the developers will have to look at this.

Ok Signals, thanks very much for looking into the logs for me. I think you are right about DVDFab 9 on the desktop not seeing the DVD drive properly. DVDFab 8QT on the desktop sees and opens the DVD "Turbo" literally in seconds but DVDFab 9 on the same machines fails, just as fast, with the "Please check if it's playable" error.

After another attempt at re-installing I have had success with my laptop but not with the desktop, which remains the same. What is very surprising, though, is just how long the laptop now spends doing its initial read (decryption?) of the DVD, while making noise as if the read head is flying backwards and forwards across the disk like a crazy thing, before it finally manages to become ready to copy the movie. I'm certain this is not a hardware or disk fault because DVDFab 8QT performs its initial read of the DVD in a few seconds.

Have DVDFab 9's latest releases become very slow to do this or "is it just me"?

          Thanks again.

            Try 9143 here:

If this works then we know its 9145 you can always go back to the new version.I have had problems with 9145 that 9143 doesn't have though not the same as yours give it a try if you like. Also make sure your windows version has all the updates and your video card is up to date on drivers.

I'm having the same problems with version 9.1.4.5.

I installed the 9.1.4.3 beta version and it is able to at least read the contents of the disk.

                Actually 9.1.4.3 failed after ~30min with a Error=102 failure

Thanks for the advice glenns (especially the bit about how to post logs).

I tried 9.1.4.3 Beta and got the same result ("Please check if it's playable") with DVD "Turbo" loaded, although I then got an additional message along the lines of "check the device is still connected" (!). It really does look as though DVDFab 9 doesn't like my DVD reader, which is a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-222BB ATA device.

On the same machine, and without doing anything but closing 9.1.4.3 Beta and then starting DVDFab 8Qt, I was able to load "Turbo" and DVDFab 8 was ready to copy it in seconds.

In v9.1.4.5, try changing the I/O mode in Common Settings->Drives->Read from Auto to SPTI or ASPI.

ccrotty:Are you in the UK also? 102 is a read error normally we would ask you to check the disk for scratches and clean the disk and try again but I believe this is caused by something else try version 8 and see if that will work for you if not post your dvdfab internal log file.

                        Blackcat3000:
Can you try with a older dvd disk not a newer one with version 9 just to see if its copy protection on the UK disk.
Also when doing a full cleaning of fab did you do this if not try it.

Please uninstall old Fab with Fabs uninstaller (you find it where Fab is stored on your computer same folder), download newest free version of CCleaner found here , run the registry cleaner with the option "old prefetch" checked in advanced options when the program is opened its on the left side then after its checked run the cleaner. (it's unchecked by default) Run the registry cleaner until nothing is found maybe 2 or 3 times if that's what it takes to show all clean.

Now download version 9145 from the forum or Fabs front page.
save it to your download folder, right click the installer and choose install as administrator.

The file cleaner in CC cleaner will have the old prefech file check box not the registry cleaner so do both.

CBR929:Might want to change your instructions to include the above.

So I completely uninstalled version 9 and installed the 9.1.4.3 (beta) version from scratch.

When I try to 'Full Disc' copy a blu-ray title, everything starts up ok, but 2 minutes in (after 135MB copied), nothing else copies. The 'Task Time Left' keeps increasing until it eventually zero's out and the MB/s transfer rate keeps dropping towards zero. I can let it sit for hours and not see any errors. If I look at the location it is copying the files, the directory size does not get any larger.
I have included the internal log for this action below.

                            Other tidbits of information:
                            1. If I preview the disc, it can play the whole movie.
                            2. If a try to rip the disc, and encode it in H.264 format (PS3), it will encode about 18 minutes of the movie and then say it is successfully finished. I made sure I selected the title that was over 2 hours long, and if I repeat it, it always stops encoding at exactly the same spot.

                            Code:
                            DVDFab 9.1.4.3 (2014/05/18 16:11:10)

Try going into common settings and disabling the GPU(s). That GTX 760 might be using an unsupported CUDA version in the driver. Give it a try, nothing to lose.
