If that were the case, you would not be the only one reporting it. Problems that can't be duplicated are a difficult fix.

I'm thinking maybe its a chipset thing. Most P4 laptops out there don't even have burners and those that do have probably been retired long ago.

I'd be curious to hear from anyone else using a P4 laptop and v9 to see how similar their hardware is and what their experience is with it.

That would be good information and interesting. From your description of the symptoms, it sounds like all the disc I/O is being handled by the CPU, not by chipsets or DMA controllers. Have you combed through the BIOS settings to see if there is anything helpful? The symptoms are classic PIO transfer mode instead of UDMA.
