7020 Deletes contents of Target Folder

A little background info:

I usually copy a bunch of DVD's to my hard drive using DVD to DVD then rip them using DVD to Mobile.

I was using the trial version of the software until last week when I bought licenses for both DVD to DVD and DVD to Mobile.

Today I installed 7020 Beta and after a reboot all the DVD copies that I made were GONE. It seems that DVDFab deleted the contents of the target folder. Needless to say I am not very happy. I have a back up of the encoded file but all my VOB's are gone. That represents countless hours of work (100's of DVD).

Is this by design ? Can it be turned off. Can I assume that I have lost the copies for good and must start over?

What was the file path/name of your Target Folder?

The only folder that Fab controls in this regard is the Temporary directory.
This default setting is ticked on, ie.,
Delete temporary files when done

You can see that my setting is unticked.
Please check this.
I can't imagine how else Fab deleted any files.

I'm sure you've looked, but any chance you missed these files?
Were these saved to your primary hdd?...slave hdd?... ext hdd?
Does the remaining free space on your hdd seem reasonable?
How many GB are we talking?

My directory is D:\DVDFab\Temp\ The clearing of temp files by the application should not have deleted the DVD copies, they are (were) located in D:\DVDCopies.

Within that folder were subfolders for each DVD copy that I had yet to Rip with DVD to mobile and a subfolder D:\DVDCopies\ripped which contained all the DVD copy folders that I had already ripped. I had used this target for about 150 DVDs.

Yep, I looked and then cried I did check the free space and it does have a few 100 GB more than when I check before starting my encoding for the weekend. The files are not, unfortunately they are gone.

I am not looking to you to recover my files, I think they are gone unless I want to put some more serious effort in recoving them (I am a system engineer and should have followed best practices ). I just want to give you and the rest of the users a heads up so they don't experience the same thing.

Yeah, I wouldn't be able to help you recover the files. I'm just another user like you, but unlike you, I'm no engineer.

There's some decent recovery software out there and then there's always the pros.
I'm sure you're aware, but if you anticipate attempting any recovery, stop using this hdd altogether until the recovery is attempted.
Again, no doubt you know this.

I had just updated to 7.0.2.0 Beta and was in the process of converting a few flicks to an h264 profile.
I had about 350 GB of flicks on this particular hdd...and I thought
Oh No!

I swapped my Temp drectory to an empty 1 TB just in case.
It looks like all is well.

When you updated, were your settings saved?
My settings were retained with the update.

You're right, this definitely should not have happened and I can't quite connect the dots on this one.

I now think I know what happened. In the General section of the settings there is an option to Create files in subfolders of output directory. In my 6.x install I had this option selected. On the 7.x install I did not.

I''ve tinkered with this same setting in the past and have never inadvertantly lost files.
On the other hand, I've never tried with Fab 7.xxx.
Maybe a bug?

This is most definitely not by design. I can't even imagine how it happened. I decrypt to a 1TB USB drive and the only oddity I remember with 7.0.2.0 was that it (I think) reverted to the default setting for the 'files in subfolders' option, which meant that my first rip went into a folder named Customize instead of one with the volume name. I will try to duplicate this also. I do not set the output drive or subdirectory using the controls in Common Settings, I allow the UI memory to keep up with that (i.e. E:\VIDEO).

I just lost 300GB - luckily I only use the drive for backups. Usually I just keep them on there until I know my backup rip and copy are good quality by watching them and delete them later. About half of that was ones I was waiting on to burn until I got some DL discs(I am cheap and wait for sales on media, which are usually about 50% off).

The problem has solely to do with 'Create Sub-directory' function and nothing to do with the temp folder or location. Un-checked, it deletes the ENTIRE DRIVE if you proceed when it says 'The folder already exists. Do you want to overwrite it?' If checked, it works properly and continues to put the movie folders in Main Movie or Full Disc folders, WITHOUT deleting anything else.

I knew I hadn't backed up this movie yet and checked through the drive 3 times. I figured it to be a mistake, even after I renamed the output folder and got the same message. I should have stopped there, but figured it to be a small glitch in the GUI.

Upon second look with 'Create sub-folder' off, what is coming up is only the drive letter and no sub-folder listed at all. Therefore the overwrite is on the ENTIRE DRIVE. For example, it is saying 'C:\' in stead of 'C:\PINEAPPLE_EXPRESS' Wish I had caught this the first time around...

I'm very sorry to hear that another user (that we know of) fell prey to this.
I see signals has taken the matter in hand and posted a warning and contacted the author.

I have not been able to reproduce this on my system, but it froze my feet to the ground
when I thought I had wiped about 350 GB of files, many of them conversions, off one of my hdds.

Let me understand this, you have two folders with two different paths. One that is the Fab target folder with the temp folder in it, the one that is supposed to delete the files if its checked like Maineman showed us. But these users had a different folder with a different path that they moved these file too to save them. I hope I am not missing anything. Now the files from the folder with the path that Fab did not create is gone. Let me know if I missed something. I cannot as a developer see how this can happen, but maybe I missed something here.
