Copied DVD's freeze up on playback

Ok so I've been burning some DVDs and after each one I throw it in the DVD player to test playback. About half of them freeze or lag up then just fastforward to where it can play smoothly again. I put in the original DVD and it plays back flawlessly. I don't know if it's the copy, the burn, of possibly just my old DVD drive that's the issue. It may be the copy, because I made 2 burns off of the same copy and they froze up so now I'm recopying original to burn again...

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks all!!

Some burns ok and some fails during the burn. Not the top high grade media on the market. As you don't verify the burns they could be crap even if they burned ok.

The burner is pretty old and today they are cheaper than a box with bananas.

Some of the log entries indicate the drive is dying (e.g. spindle servo failure).

              No offense but your media...
              Media ID: CMC MAG-M01-00...
              is crap.
Please pick up some quality media....Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

Error Write error at 22272 (16) - Code 04 09 03 [HW error, Spindle servo failure]
Hopefully, this is due to poor/marginal quality media. Unfortunately, it can also be hardware related; your burner may be going belly up.
This burner has been around for a while.
While HP makes a pretty decent pc as manufactured pcs go, their firmware support is awful.

I'm pretty sure this HP DVD Writer 740b ED24 is really an LG GSA-4166B
You may be able to update the HP firmware and you also can probably crossflash this burner to the LG GSA-4166B..

A word of caution, if you're not comfortable flashing/crossflashing firmware, then don't.
A bad or misflash will convert your burner to a nice paperweight or doorstop

1). So definitely pick up the verbs or TY's.
2). Change your burn engine to Img
Here's a thread with a great video tutorial and other goodies on how to set up Img as Fab's default burn engine:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Wow you guys are good! Thank you so much for the info. You think they'll let me return the open pack of blank DVD's? I wasn't "completely satisfied" or something Also, thanks for recommending the good brands so I know what to look for now.

Staples only has Sony HP Memorex and the Staples brand DVDs. Where can I get Verbatim?

The ones I had were Philips, for anyone not to make that mistake again lol.

BestBuy has them retail, but you will get a much better price online. Try meritline, com, that is where I buy the Verbatims.

Ok thanks I'll just get a small pack for now and get the 100pack from newegg.con

I always just get +R and it's usually 4.7GB 16x. That's the normal right? How will I know if I need 8GB or something?

As long as your setting is for DVD5 you will not need the 8gb DL disc.
If you change to DVD9 then you will need the DL disc.

                          Sounds like a plan.

                          Here's a link for YUDEN000 T02, $33.99/100 pk spindle
These are the best SL +R media on the planet...JMO
(nothing wrong with the verbs though)

(You can use this link to shop around meritline.)

is another great online store for verbs and TY media

Be sure to look for the free shipping sales.

TY media is now shipping in a JVC spindle wrapper.
Not to worry...Taiyo Yuden actually owns JVC and not the other way around.
TY media is still made in Japan and by Taiyo Yuden

If you buy 16X media, burn 'em at 8X
If you buy the YUDEN000 T02 (rated up to 8X), burn these at 8X as well even though we generally tell folks to burn media at 1/2 the max-rated speed.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Is DVD9 higher quality? In what cases would I need a 8gb or DL? Large lengthy movies or something?

                              The short answer...yes

Whether to burn to DL media is dependent on many factors.
Most of old-timers don't compress movies much below 80% or so, but keep in mind, this is just a general statement and not a "fixed" setting.
Factors include, original file size (of the flick and any extras), bitrate of original, hardware you're viewing it on, particularly the size and quality of the TV/monitor, personal opinions as to what's good, what's ok, etc., etc.

Also worth mentioning, DL media is more expensive and the only consistently recommended DL media is:
Verbatim +R DL, preferably MIS (made in Singapore)
