DVD Ripper Lossless copy from DVD to USB drive

Sorry if this has been answered...I've searched and searched.

I travel a lot and want to take my USB 1 T portable hard drive with a few of my DVD movies on it that are not compressed. Plug it into the hotel TV. I can't figure out how to do this using the latest DVD Fab 9.1.2.5.

I tried various settings with various formats in the ripper. I tried MKV passthrough and it came out fuzzy and the audio was out of sync.

The best I've been able to do is set a WMV format to high quality, double-pass, and 1028x780. That seems to compress about 40% of the original, but retain most of the sharpness on a moderately large TV. But what I'm really after is a lossless copy of the DVD movie--I don't care if it comes out 25G large. I've got a Terabyte of space. I just want a portable version of the DVD-quality picture. Is this possible?

    Definitely something weird going then

MKV passthrough should be just taking the MPEG video and the audio stream and putting them in an MKV container, so there shouldn't be any difference in quality between the original DVD and the MKV file.

Can you do an MKV Pasthrough rip and post the logfiles?

      Yes

I would think that passthrough meant a direct copy, but it was done pretty fast. Anyway, I'll do it again later tonight and post the log...

        Odd Output

Below is the log of my wmv passthrough. What seems odd to me is this line in the log:

        Source Video Size Display : 854 x 356

Given that a 720p display is 1280 x 720, and 1080p is even higher, no wonder the passthrough results, when blown up to fill the LCD screen on the TV, look blurry.

Isn't there a setting in the DVDFab ripper that will build a sharp, lossless video file?

DVD's are usually only composed @ 720 x XXX, Over that you are relying on them being Anamorphic, yada, yada. (Have a read about anamorphic encoding & square pixels, Google is your friend)

Your source in this case is only 720 x 300.

Up-scaling is not a good idea.

It seemed so simple at first

I guess I'm asking for something impossible, but why?

            1. You play a DVD and it looks sharp on the LCD screen.
            2. You play a "lossless" copy of the dvd from a hard drive file and it looks fuzzy.

Where is the problem? Why can't I save an image of the DVD main movie to a hard drive file, then play it back on an LCD TV?

Could be that the DVD player is has hardware upscaling that is doing a better job than whatever you're using to playback the ripped copy. What are you using to playback the ripped copy?

I think Nik is correct, I have a Pioneer player that makes DVDs look very good but for converted content played from a jump drive in the USB jack, only movies converted from Blu-ray appear sharp.

                  I've Tried

To play back the ripped copy, I plug it into the USB port on the side of my Samsung TV. But I've also viewed it on the computer with the VLC player.

For DVD's I've tried various playback devices, including a Panasonic blu-ray player and the computer itself. Even on 55" screens DVD's look sharp. I use an Oppo DVD player in the main room, and that makes them look even better than usual.

Oddly, I get a sharper (nearly DVD sharp) picture when I rip to a WMV format to using the high quality setting, double-pass, and a 1028x780 output resolution. This compressed file is sharper than the "lossless" passthrough rip.

                    Finally

I did finally find a way to put a DVD on a hard drive. It actually works because the Samsung TV is capable of playing a set of iso files, and even switching to the next one in the list. You click the Copy tab, then at the very bottom of the DVDfab window where it says Save To: you select the iso option. When watching the TV, you select your hard drive as the source, then select the Video_TS folder where all the VTS files are located. Select the first VTS folder and you see your movie exactly as it would be seen via DVD. I would never have imagined that the TV was smart enough to play iso.
