    ripping taking waaaaay too long

i just downloaded this software last night to rip a DVD onto my hard drive. i was then going to convert it to AVI with another program. i set it to have good resolution, not the best, but good. just beyond 3 hours later, it finished the first pass, so i just cancelled it since i set it to 2 pass. this morning i tried doing a different DVD straight to mp4 with only 1 pass. i set it to a 1.5GB file size. it went for 2 hours, then started on a second pass...?? what gives? first, it shouldnt be doing a second pass. and second, why in God's name is it taking so long? DVDshrink takes like 30-45 min...

What do you need help with DVDFab or the other program that can not be named as you said you use another program to convert to avi. Well if you not use DVDFab for that we can not help you. If you are using DVDFab for that then could you read the and post the relevant info to this thread of yours

its DVDfab thats the problem. still ripping to HD with 3+ hours and counting. Also, im pretty new to this whole thing, so i really dont know a lot of the terminology yet.

      -DVDfab 6.2.1.8

-profile: i dont know the EXACT profile cause i didnt memorize everything. if theres a way to find this info during ripping, let me know. all i remember was i set resolution to like 8xx by 6xx and file size to 1.5GB.

      -my computer:
Dell inspiron e1505 with no mods (except OS if that counts)
      Intel Core 2 T7200 @ 2.0GHz
      2MB RAM
      120GB hard drive
Windows 7 professional 32-bit (switched from vista to 7 last week, but didnt have DVDfab on vista anyway)

i also tried Handbreak, and that was running extremely slow too. however, DVDshrink (which is what ive used for years) works much much quicker.

      SOURCE FILE TYPE: DVD disk
      SOURCE VIDEO TYPE:?
      SOURCE VIDEO RESOLUTION:?
      SOURCE AUDIO TYPE:?
      DVDFab VERSION:6.2.1.8
      DVDFab PROFILE: generic.avi.xvid.audiocopy maybe?
      OUTPUT RESOLUTION: 8xx by 6xx
      OUTPUT CROP: none
      OUTPUT BITRATE: not sure
OUTPUT PASSES: is this when ripping? (i.e. 1 or 2 pass) if so, then ive tried both, but it appears to have resorted to 2 pass even if i select 1 pass.

If you want to use Fab for the whole process, have a read of my "best Practice: DVD to Mobile" thread. Link in my signature below.

Then accurately identify where the problem is. You are being far to vague at the moment.

well i dont know how else to explain it. that thread of yours doesnt help me explain anything. the only difference is that says to use DVD>>DVD then DVD>>mobile. i just used DVD>>mobile from the start.

Well, read the thread again and use the step by step procedures outlined there instead of the way you seem to be doing it.

If as you say you are using this software to rip the movie to the hard drive and going to convert it to AVI with something else, your post makes no sense. There are no 1 or 2 pass options with the DVD to DVD, which is the option you would be using to do what you describe. You can rip the movie to the hard drive as a VIDEO_TS folder in about 18 minutes for a DL original, less than that for a SL. You can use DVD to Mobile to make the AVI directly from the DVD, but it often works better if you use the ripped VIDEO_TS folder as the Source to make the AVI conversion.

The people who have been trying to help you have used the software for many years.

What GregiBoy is trying to tell you is, make a folder on your c:drive or what ever drive you have and name it say, "movies" start DVD Fab click DVD to DVD main movie or full disc whatever option you want, put in your movie you want to rip your source will be the movie and your target will be c:drive movie folder let us know how this works.

I thought my instructions in the "Best Practice" thread were pretty simple and clear and I gave the reasons behind them.

I suppose it is hard to get across to people that are not prepared to read !!!

Well if you are ripping the DVD to computer then it should take about as long as signals said probably longer with that slow computer of yours. As for 3+ hours well if you are ripping to the hard drive as AVI then that is how long it takes with that slow computer of yours. Anyway go into common settings-general and click the reset DMA button and then try again. We still need better information that is not confusing from you to help you any further

i wouldnt call it helping when they 1)demand i put all the info in a strict format because they want it to be easier for them to read, then 2) tell me i make no sense once ive done that. the posts were just ignorant. i already stated that i dont know anything about this stuff, so id think he'd take that into consideration before posting the useless replys that he did.

now onto the subject, you are giving me something to work with here, so thank you. can you explain how it only takes 18 minutes to rip to VIDEO_TS, when it takes like 6-10 hours to rip from DVD to avi? i just dont get how there can be such a huge time difference. also, as for the VIDEO_TS folder, thats the results i get from using DVDshrink as well. but ive never known how to use all the files to create one AVI/MP4/etc. i was planning to use AutoGK to convert it, but the input source only allows one file, not sure what to do about that. i have a number of VOB files and several other types in that folder. also, on my last DVDshrink rip, the AUDIO_TS folder was empty, i dont know if thats normal or not as i have never really looked in the folders in the past...ive only burned them directly to DVD-R using nero.

Big Ry I suggest you read the DVDFab Tutorial here is link especially the part for Settings as that is the common settings I mentioned. Now as for Converting to AVI it does not take 20 minutes to do that it takes anywhere from 2 hours to 6 hours to do that depending on the computer and it can take even longer as well. Also the only way any one on the forum can get you fixed quick is if you did and posted what was asked as none of us want to ask 20 questions just for one answer and then ask another 20 questions for another answer. This is the DVDFab forum so can not help with the other program you mentioned
