I just started to get on this media player bandwagon after my kids broke another dvd.
I have an older computer (getting a new one soon) and I was wondering if that had anything to do with the fact that my rips are not as crisp as I would want them. (Is my computers slow speed causing it to not rip correctly?)
I use your samsung profile (I have a 46" samsung t.v.) to convert my dvd's and I'm not happy with the picture quality. Theres pixelation, blurriness and sometimes the pictures look like its from an old t.v. show (does that make sense).
I'm wondering if it's my computer or should I try another setting...thanks.
For the record, I bought a WD media player (thought of the Roku, but got this one instead) to watch my shows, but it's also blurry on my laptop computer.

I would seriously doubt that it is caused by your PC doing the transcoding, unless you are using CUDA/DXVA/ATI Stream and it sounds like that is not the case.

Are you playing across a network, especially wireless?

We'll need more details as this profile has been around for years and all that have used it have had great results using the inbuilt player in the Samsung TV's and external players like the Argosy and WDTV.

        Hi YoboRippr
If you are getting on the bandwagon, and you have not read GregiBoy's Best Practice: DVD to Mobile make sure you follow the procedures to the "TEE" as he is the expert in this field.

@ CBR929...yes, I have read his great tutorial and I've followed it to a "t".
@Gregiboy...I burn the dvd file to my comp, use dvdfab to convert it, put it onto my portable hdd, plug it into my WD media player and play it from there. No networking yet. I actually burn from both my desktop (over 5 years old) and my laptop (about 3 years old)...I guess I'm gonna have to watch more of my conversions to see how bad they are...so far, most of the rips look no where near dvd quality...I'll try it again and get back to you guys. Thanks.

Is your portable a newie & USB2. I have seen pixelation from USB1 drives as they cannot sustain the throughput. Also , does it also have it's own power supply as I've seen some players being unable to supply enough power over USB intermittently.

Also, is it formatted as FAT32? Again another source of problems and another source of problems is setting too high a bitrate.

Another big trap for young players is their expectations.

What I suggest is that you create a file and also have the DVD handy.

Then have both playing, file from WDTV and DVD from DVD player starting the DVD about 30 secs behind WD.

You can then swap source on TV and compare.

Also, get others to adjudge the difference, not just yourself. I think you might get a surprise in the results.

I've run into a brick wall tonight after updating to the latest DVDFab build. I was running DVDFab 7.x.x and using my XBox360 profile here, but now that profile no longer works in DVDFab 8.x.x. What's worse, I can't seem to figure out how to recreate the profile because no matter what changes I make to an existing profile (regardless of the profile I edit), when I try to save it as the default (which is how I believe you create a custom profile) DVDFab removes my modifications, resets the profile to its original state and doesn't create a new default profile I can call my own.
If I'm doing something wrong, could someone explain what I'm missing? Or can someone download my old profile and recreate it using the new profile template creation method that is apparently beyond my ability? I've taken a look at the new profiles and I'm afraid the syntax, while similar, is just different enough that I'm unable to figure out what I need to change to make a new profile that mimics my old one by hand coding it.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
                Thanks.

I ran into the same issue after upgrading to 8.0.9.8. My custom NOOKColor profile no longer registers as a valid profile. It was working fine under previous 8.0.x.x versions. And I still haven't heard anything about a profile editor being available.

If you have upgraded to the 8.1.x.x you will have problems with profiles. They are a different format. I have not seen instructions on how to convert to the new format, and the "readme" file that used to accompany the profiles with some limited explination no longer exists on the profile directory as I am sure it no longer applies. However, there should be a profile editor comming out any day....

Speaking of which, I am a bit disappointed about that I have found one reference to the new profile editor still out there:
                    "DVDFab 8.1.0.1 Qt Beta (June 25, 2011)

                    New: Updated language files.
New: Some minor changes and improvements.
Fix: Several problems with commandline support.
Fix: All known problems with new profile implementation, like conversion settings cannot be changed. Also the new profile editor will be out in next week, please wait."
I'm not sure what the problem is, probably bigger fish to fry, but too many software companies get into trouble when they make promises, however some update whould be good since they did promise this woud be released this week. Not being impatient, just pointing out the fact that it was promised and people are waiting for it since there is no other guidance that I can find on the new profile structure. It is a bit more complex from what I can see and I would rather not muck around with things I don't fully understand.

                      HTC Flyer

I've had success with the following to be used on the HTC Flyer:

                      1) iPod Touch profile, with default conversion settings, works with the native HTC Flyer player, the 'Gallery'
                      2) Another route: download from Android Market other video players; doubleTwist and arcMedia. Between the two, you should be able to play a variety of rips, such as; WMV, AVI, and MP4.

DVDFab 8.1.1.2 crashes on startup with this MKV profile

Any reason why DVDFab 8.1.1.2 crashes on startup while loading the MKV profile below? Does the profile need to be updated somehow?

I put the 'mkv.pineappleprofile.xml' file in 'DVDFab 8 Qt\profiles3\' folder and file 'Pineapple_MKV_CF19.preset' in 'DVDFab 8 Qt\profiles3\preset' folder. Then DVDFab 8.1.1.2 crashes on startup.

I purchased Blu-ray Ripper due to this nice profile and the CUDA support, so would appreciate any help on this matter, thanks! Also, I am a HD newbie encoder, so please bear with me if I need to post this elsewhere

It is using the High profile, and managed to get the constant quality to work, so if you use it you don't have to enter a bitrate, just leave it at the default and it all works itself out. It is using a constant quality of 19 (but that can be changed to anything if you edit the file)

So far tested it and it looks good - really good - especially as it can burn in any subs and remove any HD on blurays.

I have enclosed a zip file containing the xml and the preset file in case anyone else out there is interested.

For those of you that are better a writing the presets I am sure you will be able to do a better job.

                        Thanks. DB

                          New HD XBox 360 Profile

                          Hey all,
It took me a while to get around to it (and even longer to figure out HOW to do it), but here's a zipped file of the updated version of my large-screen, Hi-Def, XBox 360 profile. This new profile works in DVDFab v8.1.x and has a few differences from the earlier version. Most important of which is that this new version allows for a choice of resolutions for your file which affects both file size and playback quality. You can choose between 1920x1080, 1280x720 or 720x405. Out of respect for those with limited hard drive space, I've made the default 720x405.

A note about those resolution choices; although I set them up at the above 16x9 specific ratios, the actual pixel dimensions you see may be different based on the original sources dimensions. For example; a movie that is 16x10 or a standard definition (4x3) TV show will not be re-sized to 16x9. Instead, the width dimension chosen should remain constant, but the height will change. So if you choose 720x405 but your original file is 4x3, then your output dimensions might be 720x540 to keep it at a 4x3 ratio. This will avoid the "stretched" or "squashed" look you would otherwise get when changing a videos aspect ratio.

Also, and most unfortunately, DVDFab no longer allows for a constant bitrate to be specified in a profile the way it has in the past. This means that even though I specified a constant bitrate of 4400 for all pixel dimensions in this profile, the bitrate shown is never 4400 and will actually change based on which of the screen sizes you choose. I can't figure out how to correct this, so what I do is choose my output screen size (1280x720, for example) and then manually change the bitrate to 4400. That seems to work, but if someone can figure out how to make the bitrate "stick" I would really appreciate it!

Note that it is not the video bitrate but the bits per pixel that should be kept constant as the frame dimensions change if you want the same image quality. DVDFab keeps the b/p the same value as the frame dimensions are changed.

Is it possible to specify the bpp using DVDFab? I may be a bit slow today, but I can't find where one can set that attribute.

I am checking on this, it has been an annoyance for the past several months, can't remember when it actually started. I have found a setting in the profiles that may be it, I am waiting to hear from the devs, probably not before tonight USA time.
