DVD jumpy playback

Repro this issue on DVD player and somoe BD player, and NOT repro on PS3 and computer(TMT3/PowerDVD). So maybe this is a issue form hardware buffer. Now devs are fixing this issue.

Hey eon, sorry to be so long getting back to you.
I converted Armegeddon BD, Region A, Main Movie (30.8 GB)
to standard dvd9, 7.94 GB, burned to Verbatim MKM 001 (MIS).

The only departure from my usual was using VSO.
I use Img almost exclusively, but Img told me it was not able to properly position a layer break.
Yes, I could have hassled with it, but I'm late and gotta get moving so I just selected VSO instead.

(Generally, I'm not burning much these days anyway.
I'm archiving everything to hdds and playing via my Argosy MP)

The dvd9 plays flawlessly in my standalone...Pioneer DV-48AV and in my son's PS3 (and of course, my pc).
No problems at all

We're in the process of moving, but if I can locate one of my kids' standalones, I'll give it another shot at playback.

Looks like the dev team is suspecting a hardware buffer issue.
In any case, they're working on it and hopefully will have a fix in soon.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully it is a buffer thing. Actually I have not encoded to DVD9 yet - I always go to DVD5 - I wonder if that may be one of the problems?

Hmmm....dvd5, huh? Sorry I missed that.
Like I said, I don't burn much and I since I playback via MP, I haven't used BD to DVD much at all.

I wonder roughly, where it is that most of us hit a wall in terms of compression and decent quality video. Although there are many factors in play and wide variability user to user, hardware to hardware, users will hit a brick wall at some point.

Take the Armegeddon BD file of 30.8 GB.
When compressed by roughly 388% to a DL, it plays just fine for me.

I can give it a shot to SL media, but this means compression by about 705%.
Seems like a lot to ask.

Now a BD file size of about 18 GB to a dvd5, seems more likely to succeed.

Who knows, as I said I don't have any first-hand knowledge whatsoever.

From what I am seeing - I don't think it is actually anything to do with the burning process:

As I mentioned in an earlier post I have played the files that have been generated from DVDFab straight to my TV via both a WD TV Live and a Dvico TVIX box. Both of these show the same jitters and there has been no burning done. The encoded files are just taken from one hard drive and put on another.

If it works then I will certainly be purchasing it - but not knowing if it is going to work I don't want to waste money.

Was your download before or after Fengtao's post? He may have changed something in the installer.

re-downloaded the installer - allowed me to run the Blu-ray to DVD - Thanks for that.

However, ran it twice. Each time it gets to the end of the encoding and then crashes saying DVDFab unexpectedly quit or something to that extent.

Any suggestions? I am running in software mode only - however the new lightning option is turned on.

I will try again tomorrow with that turned off to see if that helps.

Just ran it again with the Lightning option turned off - still crashed at the end when it reached 100% with the message:

"A Problem casued the program to stop working correclty"

Shame - I was really wanting to see if this version got rid of the stutters in the playback.

Looks like you have got rid of the stutters :-)

Ran a test with software encoding and decoding only. Used the cheapest DVD's and burnt them at the highest speed. Worked without any stutters :-)

Going to run another test with CoreAVC and CUDA enabled to see if that makes any difference to the speed.

Also hope you can implement the 2 pass version too :-)

Just ran another test - CoreAVC and CUDA enabled - did the conversion ok - did not see any difference in the encoding time.

So far happy - will test with some subtitles and forced subtitles too.
