We lived in the same world. You're an old fart, too, I see. Those were the days. Windows was useless until Windows 386. DESQView was the way to go. I used it briefly for a multi-line BBS until I switched to TBBS which was natively multi-line. Windows 95 was a joke compared to OS/2. I never went beyond OS/2 Warp 3. I switched to Windows NT and have been with them pretty much every alternate version since. I'm running Win10. Screw Windows 11. When Windows 12 comes out, I'll wait a year and then think about getting it.

I fell so much better now - I thought I was alone in the "every alternate version of Windows is to be avoided at all costs" assessment. I despise Windows 11 and will keep running 10 as long as humanly possible.

Alta Vista? Lycos? Excite? Ask Jeeves? My go to was Northern Light. I thought it was so good!

Astalavista was where it was at. Followed by my four binders of Microsoft Technet CDs.

Holy shit i forgot about OS/2! I am so old. I actually liked OS/2 Warp

What truly makes me feel old is when i moved last time, i found a hole puncher for 3.5" Floppy Disks. It would turn a 720k Floppy into a 1.44MB and i was so excited!

I was working for IBM when OS/2 2.0 was in Beta. We used to download the internal betas as they dropped and installed them on our home PCs. I still have some of those 3.5" floppies in the basement. I also have my OS/2 Warp copy that IBM gave employees for home use when that came out. Fun times!!

I used to run it, 95%, only flipping to Windows when I needed to use my HP Scanner because there were no OS/2 drivers for it.

Now like you guys, i despised Windows 11 at first. But now, i prefer it over Windows 10

I never thought i'd say that but here i am. To be fair, i didn't like Windows 10 when it first came out and i was still on Windows 7 for ages after that.

I currently have it on all my PCs and Laptops but am still on Windows 10 for my 4 servers. They don't have the TPM (well 1 does) but there are ways of installing Windows 11 without the TPM. I will still keep Win10 on the servers until the motherboards die and by that time, Win10 security updates will no longer be available so we'll see what OS i prefer.

Two of my laptops are 2-in-1 so installing WSABuilds on them is a must for me. I also tell all my friends to do so. You don't need a 2-in-1 or even Win11 for it (Although i like it better on Win11 than Win10) but having a Windows laptop that becomes a 14+ inch Android tablet is amazing. I've actually had people on the plane ask me WTF this sorcery is

Ahhh DesqView. QEmm386.sys. Its why I upgraded from a 286 to a 386sx so I could use QEMM to use the memory above 640k, and multi task, rather than task switch. Did you ever try DesqViewX? I played with it a little, but never really got comfortable with it.

BBS? Most of the ones I called used Wildcat. Fun times. Man i racked up phone bills for those long distances calls to BBS's back in the day!

I did use Compuserve, Genie and Prodigy.

And I did get started on a TRS-80 Mod 1... My first home computer was a Kaypro II that ran CP/M!! Ahh hex editing Wordstar config files to add the escape P commands for my Star Micronics and Epson dot matrix printers so I could print in bold, italics, double high, double wide, super script, subscript, etc.

Swapping EPROM chips to do a "bios upgrade"... yeah, no flash bios on my Adaptec 1520 ISA SCSI adapters

Win 1.02 bluescreen before there were bluescreens, Win 2.x a.k.a. 286 a.k.a. 386 better, Win 3.xx this is new it works, Win 3.11 for Workgroups rock solid, Win95 even better, Win98 SE same song different dance, Win ME vomit, Win XP rock solid, Win 2000 great for business, Win NT 3.5 server/workstation built like a tank, Win NT 4.0 server/workstation built like two tanks, Win Vista more vomit, Win 7 what XP should have been so I forgive you for Vista, Win8 WTF!?!?, Win8.1 not helping, Win10 gimme all your data in a flat pastel world and I'm still pissed about 8.x, Win11 macintrash.

I know I missed a few but those stick out in my mind.

I'd probably like Win10 if it wasn't so butt ugly and all the techy tweaks are buried 10 dialogs deep. They made it much easier for the average user but for power users it takes a lot of work to trim down and tweak. What can I say, I like Aero. Win10 to me looks like someone stuck Post-It notes and animated GIFs all over my screen and they keep changing color and flashing. God mode works still so that's a plus.

I had it where I used to work and trimmed it down and installed OpenShell and it was pretty darn stable after that.

I have to be honest, chatting on this message board is bringing back as many memories as we are talking about. Absolutely one of the best internet conversations ive been involved in for years. Kudos. Heres a question, full disclosure im going to nerd out right here, does anyone have a running copy of each windows version from 3.11 through windows 10 in a VM with working sound and network? Asking for a friend . Also unpopular opinion but windows ME one of my favorite OSes even though it ran like absolute dog crap and was broken more then it was working.

You should have been using Zmodem. It allowed you to pick up where the communication ended. Ymodem might have done that as well, I forget, too long ago.
